Romantic & Orientalist

European travel artists between 1820 and 1880 produced the most detailed visual record of the coffeehouses of the Ottoman Empire, North Africa, and the Levant. The framing carries the orientalist register of the period; the buildings, lamps, water-pipes, brass coffee pots, and seated clientele are documentary record. We include the work and we name what it is.

An independent visual archive of coffee, 1700–1925. We work through Wellcome, Gallica, the Rijksmuseum, Museu Paulista, the Library of Congress, and the institutional collections where the printed record of coffee survives. We restore what we find. Nothing is designed, nothing is faked.
