Brazilian coffee plantation painting is unique to São Paulo. Antonio Ferrigno, Alfredo Norfini, Benedito Calixto, and Pedro Américo painted the fazendas of the interior between roughly 1890 and 1920. The work documents the largest coffee production system of its era. We treat the category with curatorial care — the labor system depicted is part of the history.
